Whether you are a
long time resident of Bastrop County or you are new to the Most of Bastrop County sits in a bio-region called the Oak Woods and Prairies. Intermixed grasslands and oak/hickory forests characterize most of this area. Here you will find mostly cattle ranching with limited hay farming. The bio-region known as the Blackland Prairie edges into Bastrop County along the length of the Travis County line and also fingers into the middle of the county from the northeast and the southwest. Once a grassland prairie, most of this region is now utilized as farmland supporting corn, cotton, and grain crops. Sitting in the middle of all this is our heart, the "Lost Pines". When you think of Bastrop County you think of the pine trees that seem to come out of nowhere! Slicing the county in half, running from the northwest to the southeast is the Colorado River. In these regions we live. And to make our lives more complete, we garden. People garden for many different reasons. You may garden for better tasting food. Others may garden for cut flowers for the dinner table. For whatever reason, you need to garden. Our time, which is precious, flies by in this fast-paced world. You need to find those things in this world that give you a place in time. Something to slow the revolutions with which your world turns. Gardening is one of those things. You simply can't garden fast! Anybody ever heard of speed gardening? Doesn't exist. Seasoned gardeners know the peace that comes from working the earth. Watching those first flowers burst forth in spring is life affirming! Those of you that have yet to experience this peace and quietness are missing out. Whether you have never gardened or have had bad experiences, you need to give it a try. As in most things, some people are naturals and some have to work a little harder. With due diligence you too can become seasoned. There is one secret I will let you in on. When you garden you need to work within the confines of what nature has given us. There are balances in nature. When you achieve the proper balance in your soil conditioning, your watering, and the beneficial insect life in your garden, you will have more success than trying to falsely control what is set before you. Trying to achieve these balances has come to be called 'organic' gardening. It follows the basic principal of building the soil and letting the soil produce a healthy plant. With a healthy plant you experience less problems in your garden. Fewer problems lead to more enjoyment! A joyful life is what we all strive for! I would like to assist you in your gardening efforts.
