A Texas Grown Original

Kimas Tejas Nursery supports sustainable living and organic gardening. If you have never visited us, we would like to invite you to our nursery. We have many plants, but we specialize in native and well-adapted perennials. Along with our large selection of plant material, you will find a complete line of organic fertilizers and soil amendments and the advice on how to use them. We think that gardening organically is earth-friendly. But perhaps an equally important reason to garden organically is that it simply works better. So whether you're looking for some quality plant material or the ingredients to make them shine, come see us. We are here to help!

Whether you are a long time resident of Bastrop County or you are new to the area you are sure to recognize that you are in a special place. Though it is becoming more urban, most of the county can still be considered a rural place populated by friendly and caring people. When you combine the character and quality of the people with the unique setting of the "Lost Pines" you have a picture of our fair county. Whether it is running into someone you know on Main Street or taking a slow drive into our picturesque countryside or picnicking at one of our two state parks you feel like you're where you're supposed to be. Home. Home is where the heart is and Bastrop County has a very big heart!

Most of Bastrop County sits in a bio-region called the Oak Woods and Prairies. Intermixed grasslands and oak/hickory forests characterize most of this area. Here you will find mostly cattle ranching with limited hay farming. The bio-region known as the Blackland Prairie edges into Bastrop County along the length of the Travis County line and also fingers into the middle of the county from the northeast and the southwest. Once a grassland prairie, most of this region is now utilized as farmland supporting corn, cotton, and grain crops. Sitting in the middle of all this is our heart, the "Lost Pines". When you think of Bastrop County you think of the pine trees that seem to come out of nowhere! Slicing the county in half, running from the northwest to the southeast is the Colorado River. In these regions we live. And to make our lives more complete, we garden.

People garden for many different reasons. You may garden for better tasting food. Others may garden for cut flowers for the dinner table. For whatever reason, you need to garden. Our time, which is precious, flies by in this fast-paced world. You need to find those things in this world that give you a place in time. Something to slow the revolutions with which your world turns. Gardening is one of those things. You simply can't garden fast! Anybody ever heard of speed gardening? Doesn't exist. Seasoned gardeners know the peace that comes from working the earth. Watching those first flowers burst forth in spring is life affirming! Those of you that have yet to experience this peace and quietness are missing out. Whether you have never gardened or have had bad experiences, you need to give it a try. As in most things, some people are naturals and some have to work a little harder. With due diligence you too can become seasoned. There is one secret I will let you in on.

When you garden you need to work within the confines of what nature has given us. There are balances in nature. When you achieve the proper balance in your soil conditioning, your watering, and the beneficial insect life in your garden, you will have more success than trying to falsely control what is set before you. Trying to achieve these balances has come to be called 'organic' gardening. It follows the basic principal of building the soil and letting the soil produce a healthy plant. With a healthy plant you experience less problems in your garden. Fewer problems lead to more enjoyment! A joyful life is what we all strive for!

I would like to assist you in your gardening efforts. I started Kimas Tejas Nursery twelve years ago with five tables of bedding plants. Timely and honest advice, coupled with a wide selection of quality plants at a fair price, has allowed us to grow to almost two acres of plant selections! Whether you want to grow a vegetable garden or you need to landscape your home, we are here to assist you. We have been blessed with a beautiful and wonderful place to call home. We can all increase the peace in our lives and the beauty of Bastrop County by becoming involved in something that we can enjoy the whole of our lives. Simply, gardening is just that. It is an act of eternal optimism and hope. Sow those seeds of optimism and see what comes up!
